Nalli Kuppuswami Chettiar embodies the essence of integrity and service, weaving a legacy that transcends silk and art, inspiring generations to cherish culture and community.

Nalli Kuppuswami Chettiar, 80, is a prominent Chennai-based businessman and philanthropist recognized for his significant contributions as a patron of fine arts. As the Chairman of the venerable Nalli business house—established over 90 years ago and renowned for its quality silk products—he has cultivated a reputation for excellence in customer care and operational efficiency. Chettiar is also an accomplished author, having written several business books in Tamil that interpret ancient Indian texts, earning accolades from various literary bodies.

In recognition of his contributions to trade and industry, the Government of India honoured him with a prestigious title in 2003. Additionally, his patronage of arts and culture was acknowledged by the Tamil Nadu Government, which awarded him the Padma Shri and Kalaimamani titles. An apolitical figure, Chettiar is actively involved in public life and serves as a generous donor to various arts, culture, and educational initiatives. He holds positions on the governing boards of numerous cultural societies and educational institutions. The monks of the Ramakrishna order have appointed him Vice-President of their educational institutions, recognizing his public service, honesty, and humility.

Chettiar has chaired the Kapaleeswarar Temple Trust Board for three terms and has been a member of the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams Trust Board. He is also the Founder President of an NGO dedicated to counseling individuals facing depression. Currently, he serves as a Patron of the Tamil Chamber of Commerce and is respected by industrial bodies such as FICCI and CII.

His affiliations extend to several prestigious organizations; he is the President of the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Brahma Gana Sabha, Mudhra, Mylapore Fine Arts Club, Madras Film Society, and International Dance Alliance. He also serves as Vice-President of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Chennai Kendra and is involved with various educational institutions.

Chettiar's influence reaches high-ranking officials across India and abroad, including Presidents, Governors, Prime Ministers, and diplomats from countries like Singapore and Malaysia. His integrity is well-known; he has never leveraged his influence for personal gain, viewing public service as a calling that he approaches with professionalism.

Born in 1940 in Kanchipuram, Chettiar faced adversity early on when he lost his father during his schooling. Despite being a top student, he forwent college to join the family business after completing his school final examinations in 1956. Over six decades, he transformed a modest 200 sq. ft. silk store into a sprawling 30,000 sq. ft. showroom that extends across multiple streets in Chennai. Nalli now boasts nearly 40 branches worldwide, including locations in the US, Canada, the UK, and Singapore.

Customer care remains at the core of Chettiar's business philosophy; he is known for going above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. A voracious reader with a rich home library, he actively participates in Chennai's annual Book Fair.

Chettiar has authored numerous books on management and ethics, with two receiving awards from the Tamil Nadu Government. He has instituted awards to promote national integration through literary translations and has translated works such as Vyada Gita and Vidura Neethi from The Mahabharata. Fluent in Tamil, Telugu, English, and Hindi, he continues to be an influential figure in both business and cultural spheres.
