THE NKC UNIVERSE

An annual dance conference, the Natya Kala Conference or NKC, for short, is one of the Krishna Gana Sabha’s marquee properties that has truly stood the test of time since its inception in 1981.

Under one single roof, over four to five days, between December 26 and December 30, the Natya Kala Conference brings together artistes, scholars, writers, academics, critics and lovers of arts, dance in particular, to engage and immerse in a series of lectures and presentations that are thoughtfully curated by a Convenor, who is chosen by the Krishna Gana Sabha.

GENESIS

The Natya Kala Conference found its birth in 1981 following a discussion between R Yagnaraman, then Secretary of Krishna Gana Sabha and Bharatanatyam and Bharatanrithyam artiste, scholar and exponent, Dr Padma Subrahmanyam, who reiterated the need for a forum exclusively dedicated to bringing together diverse Indian classical dance forms. As an academic platform meant to kindle curiosity and allow practitioners, researchers and rasikas to engage with the arts and deepen their knowledge of the arts in a manner that is holistic and immersive, the Natya Kala Conference has, over the years, continued to uphold this vision. The curator for NKC is a recipient of the Nrithya Choodamani award, conferred by the Krishna Gana Sabha.

Every curator who has helmed this position has infused their own vision into this larger vision and ensured the platform has grown not only in terms of diversity but also inclusivity.
